Essex Inter Club Competition   23rd February 2017

Report by Linda Paul

On Thursday evening 23rd February we hosted this year’s Essex Inter Club Competition an event we organise every year.  It was necessary to hold this in the Club’s usual upstairs hall location, a departure from past when this event was always held in the larger hall downstairs.

We welcomed guests from most of the 9 Clubs taking part and a few from Leigh!  It made for a cosy evening with hardly a vacant seat.

Our Judge, Malcolm Hardie, who hails from the Whitstable area of Kent battled the elements and traffic problems to get to us as the Dartford QE2  Bridge was closed due to “Storm Doris”.  It was good to welcome him back to Judge this event after an absence of some years.

His comments and judging reflected his many years’ experience and I believe a fair assessment was given to all the images with a satisfactory result at the end of the evening.

The standard of entries was very high and Malcolm made many comments to the effect that this made his task difficult.  He indicated he would attempt to use a good range of scores in order to give some separation to the images he was judging.  However the final result reflects the closeness of the standards from the Clubs taking part as in some cases only 1/2  or 1 point separated the Club’s positions.

Upminster were awarded the Shield ahead by only 1/2 point from Benfleet in 2nd place. Malcolm also chose his winning image from Upminster’s entry - Mushroom by Dave Winton.  All other entries awarded 10 points were commended by Malcolm.

We languished one place from bottom which this year went to Southend.  They will no doubt wish to exact revenge for this when the Annual Southend/Leigh Battle takes place this year at Southend’s club on Friday 21st April…make a note in your diary.  They always make us very welcome with tea and cakes in the interval!
